Having a doggo is one of life’s greatest blessings. 😇 However, things can get pricey real quick when they get sick or have annual check-ups. While doggos deserve the world, it’s definitely helpful to save costs whenever possible so we live out our financially savvy pawrent dreams with our furchild. 💗
As pawrents, it is our mission to keep our puppers as safe as pawsible! Precaution keeps the vet away – spending money is sweeter when it’s on a road vacation with our doggo instead of shots, you know 😖?
Curious on how to effectively save on vet bills? We’ve got you covered!
1) Pet-proof your home!
Although pet-proofing is commonly associated with protecting your belongings from your doggo, it’s actually a useful method to protect your pupper from choking hazards like pills, socks and plastic bags (basically anything that can put them in danger)!
While nothing in the world can replace our precious doggos, they don’t always know what's best for themselves. Hence, it is the pawrents’ responsibility to make sure such dangers are out of reach. Here are a few tips on how to prevent unsavory accidents:
- Use childproof latches to keep them from prying open cabinets, especially food that’s dangerous to their well-being like chocolates and nuts.
- Keep your toilet lid closed! This can prevent your doggo from drinking toxic cleaning fluids.
- Move all medications, chemicals, pest control products and cosmetics to high shelves.
2) Proper hygiene is key
Just like us hoomans, dogs need to be constantly showered and groomed to stay in tip-top condition. Maintaining good hygiene is super important in preventing infections, diseases and odor in addition to providing a better quality of life for both you and your furchild.
As Malaysia is a tropical country, showers play a crucial role in preventing ticks and mites as they tend to thrive in warm weather. If you’re short of time, dog-friendly wet wipes can serve as an alternative to keep them clean, which can be exceptionally helpful during outings or emergencies.
Besides that, keeping their bedding clean also comes into play. While there’s nothing wrong with your dog being a little adventurous, the remnants of their escapades such as dirt and fleas can stick onto their fur. This will not only dirty your house, but their sleeping space as well. Hence, it is important to constantly wash their bedding to kill off any remaining bacteria that might negatively influence their health in the long run.
3) Vaccinations for the win❣️
Prevention is always better than cure! Vaccines are important as they protect your doggo from getting sick or infecting other doggos! Many diseases, such as rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis, are extremely life-threatening diseases that can easily spread among dogs.
As vaccines work by stimulating the dog's immune system to produce antibodies, your doggo will have the ability to fight off specific infections that are potentially deadly. Having a sick dog is definitely no fun for you, your doggo and others. 😭 Plus, it can add up to many inconveniences and costly vet bills that might put a halt to whatever vacation plans you were planning. 😞
Additionally, by vaccinating your doggo, you're also protecting other dogs and hoomans in your community. It's a simple way to prevent many life-threatening diseases and keep your furchild healthy (along with their furry friends as well)!
Make sure to consult with your local veterinarian to develop a vaccination plan that fits your dog's needs!
4) Consider applying for pet insurance
While pet ownership can bring immense joy and companionship, it also comes with significant responsibilities — including providing adequate healthcare for your furry friend.
Just like us hoomans, medical bills for doggos can be quite costly. However, it is inevitable that our furkids may experience accidents, allergies or illnesses that will need medical treatment.
This is where pet insurance comes in. By applying for a pet insurance plan, pawrents will be able to cover the costs of veterinary care without straining their financial budget. Although pet insurance may seem non-essential to many, it can help offset the cost of expensive veterinary bills — especially for ongoing, long-term treatments. Basically, it’s a worthwhile investment for pawrents who wish to take extra precautions. 🩺
